There’s an animal living in my house, garage or business

Many wild species will take advantage of living spaces like attics, sheds, or garages. The ones we get the most calls about include raccoons, squirrels, bats, mice, rats, skunks, some bird species, and occasionally opossums.

What kind of animal is it?

Before you decide how to fix the problem, you need to figure out what kind of animal you’re dealing with. Each species has a unique natural history and specific habits that will dictate how best to encourage them to move along.

To determine what type of animal is living in the space, monitor the area. Look and listen. What do you hear? When do you hear it—day? night? constantly or only sometimes? Look for clues like droppings, signs of chewing or scratching, or any tracks left behind. A thin coat of flour around the entry point can help you figure out the species by the paw prints.

If you’ve figured out what kind of animal you’re dealing with, see our page on common conflict situations. Still unsure?…
