Wild Ball 2007

On Thursday, September 27th , the brick walls and metal structure of the Evergreen Brick Works in the Don Valley, a former quarry and heritage site built in 1889, was transformed into a beautiful and elegant space. This transformation, made possible in part by Metalworks Production Group, was led by volunteer designer Mimi Lai Drivas.

Early arrivals were treated to the beautiful music of the Algoma String Trio. Passing by these three lovely volunteers wearing funny wild animal ears, guests entered the unique and impressive Brick Works. The industrial pad had become a décor space with a modern twist featuring organic flowers from EcoFlora and contemporary furniture graciously donated by Progressive Furniture Rentals.  In the main area were two interlocking lounges for curbside views of the laughter and fun led by Wild Ball Co-hosts Roger Ashby and Traci Melchor.

Five bars staffed by wonderful volunteers to keep guests well hydrated served up tasty Yellowtail wines, locally brewed beers, and delicious martinis courtesy of Iceberg Vodka. Dedicated volunteers circulated the room with delicious hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chef Jono, and guests helped themselves to yummy Frites from Jamie Kennedy Kitchens, Pad Thai from Mangosteen, or grazed at the cheese & fruit table with delights from Ivanhoe Cheese Inc., Woolwich Dairy, and Shasha Bread Co.

Those with a sweet tooth were drawn to the beautiful cupcakes from Yummy Stuff and pastries from Signature Bakery. And for most, the end of the night called for a visit to the Merchants of Green Coffee table for a delicious, fair trade, organic cup of coffee! For the rest, it was time for one last Awesome Possum martini!

Volunteer caricature artists Victoria Panos, Sam Gorrie, and Robert Westall were on hand to draw up a funny likeness, with Jade White on standby to massage those aching auction bidding hands! This was a good thing as those bidding hands were kept very busy with the large silent auction featuring a wide selection of exciting items (for a complete list click here).

A visit to the TWC education area definitely included a stop at the TWC viewing booth to see an unusual sight: a Southern Flying Squirrel, considered a “species-at-risk”. Also captivating was the video footage, nestled inside TWC’s Wildlife Rescue van, showing various rescues performed by Toronto Wildlife Centre staff and volunteers.

For the wanna be artist, the unique opportunity to participate in a beautiful work of art was on offer with artist Sharlena Wood of Shared Palette. The final creation was then included in the live auction!

Injecting a little rock and roll into the night were The Spoons who put on an excellent performance, followed by an exciting live auction led by volunteer Jay Mandarino. Live auction items included an evening of cooking with Chef David Adjey of the Food Network’s Restaurant Makeover, a “daring plum” Vespa, an eight day walking holiday in Britain courtesy of Teacher’s Travel, a dinner with CP24 Principal Anchor and host of Animal House Calls Ann Rohmer, and the opportunity to sponsor a songbird aviary at Toronto Wildlife Centre!

Thank you very much to everyone who participated in The Wild Ball. We are looking forward to Wild Ball 2008, and we hope you will join us again!
