TWC’s New Wildlife Hotline Manual is now available for purchase!

Have you ever gotten a phone call about a wildlife situation, and you weren’t sure how to handle it?  If so, we have the book for you!

Over the last several years TWC has developed, with the generous assistance of the Humane Society of the United States, an extensive information resource to aid people responding to calls about wildlife from their communities. The book was designed with staff and volunteers from humane societies, animal services organizations, conservation authorities, and wildlife rehabilitation facilities in mind.

Answering the Call of the Wild: A Hotline Operator’s Guide to Helping People and Wildlife is based largely on the expertise of TWC’s hotline staff, who have been responding to calls from all over southern Ontario since 1993.  Currently TWC’s wildlife hotline receives about 30,000 calls per year, and our staff have been invited to write and speak about operating wildlife hotlines all over North America.  Numerous biologists, naturalists, veterinarians, and wildlife rehabilitators have also contributed their knowledge to this publication.

The wildlife hotline manual is over 500 pages long, complete with colour photos and diagrams.  It contains a photo index and identification keys for baby mammals and birds, as well as quick reference guides for how to respond to hotline calls.  It also includes:

  • Tips on operating a wildlife hotline, and how to find help for an animal in need
  • Ten general information chapters on such topics as sick and injured animals, orphaned animals, conflict situations, pets and wildlife, public health and safety issues, methods of capture for animals in need, and resolving specific situations involving distressed or trapped animals
  • Forty species-specific chapters covering nearly every mammal, bird, reptile and amphibian species in southern Ontario. Each chapter contains information on nesting strategies, identification, normal adult and juvenile behaviour, rescue tips, and resolutions to common conflicts.
